A Tooth Fairy Tale Film Analysis: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Love Story
Throughout this animated journey aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering baby teeth of slumbering youngsters and placing gold beneath where they sleep. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teethâa sentiment thatâs completely understandable. He is just slightly more curious about the financial workings of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold as payment. However, Vanâs interest grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous creature he had imagined.
A Forbidden Bond and Shared Threat
Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (though itâs very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy communities are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to unite beings as one. The two species portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the other. Fairies are said to be self-centered types, given to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and primitive, but are in fact intelligent and technologically advanced.
Naturally, such a setup needs a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, if not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Overall Impression
There arenât very many animated films targeting the kind of audience that is beginning to have early romances, but arenât yet old enough for whatever teenagers view these days instead of Twilight. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, it probably wonât to be their next favorite movie, but you could do worse.
The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
