Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
